We have two new children’s Christmas books in our collection. The first is Fear Not, Joseph, by Julie Stiegemeyer. It tells the Christmas story from Joseph’s point of view, based on Matthew and Luke. We don’t know much about Joseph except that he was a carpenter and he intended to quietly divorce Mary when he found out she was pregnant. In the time of Jesus, being engaged was as serious as being married, so to break off an engagement, meant a divorce. Yet Joseph was sensitive to Mary’s feelings and intended this action without any publicity. After the angel’s message, "Fear Not!" he did not hesitate to take over the care of Mary and Jesus. The story is sensitively written, and will give children a glimpse into the feelings of Joseph.

Our second book donated by Gloria Landsverk is The Wonder of Christmas, by Dondi Daley Mackall. The children in this book are dressed up in their biblical costumes and are playing out the various scenes in the Christmas story. The book asks open-ended questions as the children wonder how each of the characters in the story felt, Gabriel, Mary, Joseph, the innkeeper, the shepherds, wise men, etc. The prose is in poetry form.

We also have a copy of The Reason for God Belief in an Age of Skepticism, by Timothy Keller. This is the book that Pastor Lance has been using in his book discussion group. Asking questions is natural and asking questions about our faith is healthy. God’s shoulders are big enough to handle any questions and doubts we may have.

We have also added Prayers for the Seasons which Pastor Sarah left when she and Nick moved away. The book contains prayers that are appropriate for the various seasons of the church year.

After Christmas we will put away the Christmas books for another year. We are still missing the book, Turn Off the Christmas Machine . Jean Prickett bought the first copy for the library and it disappeared. She bought a second copy, and it has also disappeared. If by chance, any of you readers forgot to check it out and leave the card, we would appreciate the return of this book.
